You already know who it is, your boy Viceray coming through your internets. I hope this blog finds you better than that email from that bitch in that one department. Take it easy, read about some songs that I really enjoyed last week and pop them into your listening device.

“This Past Week” is a weekly series of four songs that really stood out to me. Rather it’s new, or been in rotation forever, it’s simply just shit that really hit this past week.
- Michael

I found Homeshake what feels like forever ago, back in that Mac Demarco phase I feel a lot of people find themselves in. Homeshake is comprised entirely of Peter Sagar (fun fact he was the guitar player in Mac’s touring band). His music tends to be very airy and ambient at times, but it’s always good tunes and very relaxing. This song is not any different as it has a funky groove with disgusting guitar licks throughout and a very sick break down near the end of the song. The last bit of the song makes me enjoy the song as a whole because it sounds like Peter is almost playing off rhythm but it goes so perfectly. The album this song is featured on, “In The Shower,” is a very good album that is very dear to my heart and I highly recommend checking it out. The album cover is really cool to me. It’s simple and makes you want to look at it a little closer. Also, tits. It’s designed by his girlfriend Salina who makes dope art. Check her out on IG at salinagram (I promise I was not paid for that).

2. Zap!

Mike comes from the same cavern of rap as Earl Sweatshirt. In fact they have collaborated a few times and Earl being on this same album. If you are familiar with the type of rap I’m alluding to, you know that once Mike starts rapping, that mf don’t stop. He really raps his ass off with an unfair cadence. His fast-paced beat is a very interesting selection. I truly don’t think many people could find the pockets like Mike is able to. That being said, it was produced by Mike himself under his producer alias dj blackpower, which makes sense because it would take a real sicko to make that beat for someone else to rap on. The beat is very intriguing to listen to with the loop sounding like it’s some shit from a Vegas casino. This album is another one that is in contention for my album of the year. Once again, the cover art on this is fire.

3. Old Hunnededs

Future really been doing this shit since forever. I know a lot of people talk about how Drake is the GOAT of modern day rap, but I feel like Future deserves more of an argument than I usually hear. This album came out in 2011, more than a decade ago, and it still obviously has an impact on the rap we’re hearing today. It’s cool to hear the beat on this song and hear the progression of Future’s sound — it’s different today, but you can still hear the roots. Also, how fuckin’ catchy is this song? I had it stuck in my head all of last week and again just from writing this blog. It would be a crime not to mention Twista’s verse considering he killed it per usual. What ever happened to him?

4. Anti-matter

King Geedorah is one of the many aliases of the mystery that is… MF DOOM. We only got one album under this moniker, but it is arguably one of his best albums (in my opinion). The beats are as crisp as ever and there is no lack of obscure samples that you begin to expect and admire as you listen to the man with the metal face. This song features Mr Fantastik, who people still aren’t sure who he is. Do you realize how crazy that is? This album came out in 2003 and there are still online message boards about who this guy could possibly be. There is nearly nothing to go off of; his only two songs in existence are features on DOOM’s songs. This just further feeds into the MF DOOM lore. The song, “Anti-matter,” is produced by DOOM himself, and personally, it is one of my favorites. It is so undeniably catchy with help from the bass line and the drum sound. The verses… man, ridiculous. Him and Mr Fantastik trade bars like heavyweight boxers trading blows. Mr Fantastik’s voice is smooth like molasses but with words that smack. It’s like they almost don’t fit with how he approaches the beat. He absolutely bodies the second verse, but my favorite line goes,
“a hundred things on the re-up, of course I’m living fat
My Mercedes outside, nigga, where yours at?”
I mean, damn! That sounds so fucking cool to flex like that. I love it. Of course King Geedorah does his thing (per usual), with the witty and out of pocket bars he is so well known for. I love listening to him rap because you never know what he is going to say next; it can be so out of left field. Even when I get to memorizing his songs, I get excited about the shit he is about to say next. My favorite on this song isn’t necessarily a rhyme, but it’s the way he uses his beat in the verse. I can type about this all day and night, but it would do no justice. I encourage you to listen to the song, the part in particular I referenced is ~55 seconds into the song.

Just like that, you have my week in 4 songs. I hope one of these evoked something in you in someway. Whether it was enjoyment, confusion, disgust, excitement, reminiscent. Music’s role in emotion is something I find fascinating. In today’s world, it’s easy to go through life without actually feeling. You scroll your phone for hours on end seeing funny videos, sad videos, pointless shit, good news, bad news, and news that is just news. Going through these roller coaster of emotions and post vomit, I think it’s easy to go numb. Hopefully this batch of songs and others on my playlist can help break you out of that rut.
