Past Week’s Jams Vol. 3

Hello hello, its me Viceray. Here again just like I said I would be because I am always a man of my word, accept when I’m not. Ignore the fact it is 3 days late, we still call this progress. This past week I was really in my rap bag and I foresee that being a common theme for these next few weeks. I also realized that I haven’t featured a single rap song in any of these yet, so its only right I do now.

“This Past Week” is a weekly series of four songs that really stood out to me. Rather it’s new, or been in rotation forever, it’s simply just shit that really hit this past week.

1. Only

Sampha is your favorite artist’s favorite artist. He stands out on just about every song you have heard him on, enough to where if someone is unfamiliar with him, you can say he’s the singer on that one song (I mean this in the most complementary way possible). Some of my favorite features of his are: Too Much x Drake, Saint Pablo x Kanye, and Alabama x Frank Ocean. Make no mistake however, he has put out two incredible albums in Process and Lahai. Lahai only coming out two weeks from when this was written, has already became one of my favorite albums of the year. Since the jump I have been listening to this repeadetly and this song has been the one that catches me every time. They lyrics throughout the song are really interesting and very cleverly written. One of my favorite details is when he adds that blade sound right when he says, “projectiles coming from the side”.

2. Drug Trade

I want to start this with mentioning how cool this single cover art is. I want to follow that up with mentioning how fucking good of a producer flying lotus is. He is always pushing the limits of his music and when he partners up with a rapper, it is something special. He has songs with Earl Sweatshirt, Denzel Curry, Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak, MF DOOM, Mac Miller, I mean the list goes on on and on with each one being just as impressive as the last. On this song, he enlists the help of smoke DZA, who I honestly hadn’t heard of until this song, and Black Thought. Black Thought, to no surprise, did his thing as he does on every single one of his features he has put out (shooting 94% from the free throwline) Smoke DZA absolutely floated on this ungodly Flylo beat with a super catchy hook that fits the song perfectly. One of my favorite bars of his on this is simple but, effective which is on par for his verse; “Different Devils come with heavy metal, not Metallica This is my house, this home alone New York, I’m Kev’ McCallister”

3. Vin Skully

I don’t think I could I ever get enough songs with Alchemist producing and Earl Sweatshirt rapping. I will never get tired of it, just an elite duo. Truly, they have not missed yet. Their collab album, Voir Dire, is another album that is already one of my favorite albums of the year and has just been on repeat since it dropped. I could have picked any song to include on this, but Vin Skully’s beat is just so fuckin infectious. Accompanied with Earl’s lazy, intricate flow is just impossible to skip when it pours through the speakers. This is a very random thing to say, but I have been watching a lot of Flea videos/interviews and I would love to see his reaction to this song and album as a whole. One of my favorite parts is when Earl alludes to Walk Hard, just so genius; “Now we halvin’ like Dewey Cox out in the shed I had to unify all the plurals in pairs I promise you don’t truly want no parts of this shit”

4. Get Em Up

RIP Mac mannnn. I could really write an entire blog on Mac’s legacy and what his music means to me, but I’m going to save that for another time, maybe when I have some tissues sitting close by. You can hear Mac’s youth spring through the track as he talks shit to who ever wants to listen and brag about shit that is fly to a 19 year old who is coming up on some fame and money. I think possibly my favorite thing about this song is the warm synths. It is very reminiscent to me of old N.E.R.D. production that is a golden sound.

There you have it, my latest serving of quatro songs from last week. I told you I would keep my word motha fuckaaassss. Hopefully you enjoyed it half as much as I did making it for you.
