Hopefully you all witnessed the Anthony Roy show last night, but in case you missed it, I can summarize it for you in two words: 30. Bomb. Yeah, that’s right. Mr. Worldwide himself (my personal nickname for him since he’s on his fourth team of his collegiate career) dropped a new personal high as a Cowboy and led OSU to a 99–92 victory over #16 BYU. Oklahoma State had four other scorers in double figures and led the Cougars for almost the entire game.
A bizarre stat that has continued to grow throughout Steve Lutz’s career as head coach in Stillwater: the Pokes are undefeated when scoring more than 81 points. Including his NIT run last season, Lutz is 29–0 when OSU hangs 81+ on the scoreboard. Up next for the Cowboys is a trip to Tucson to face the top-ranked Arizona Wildcats. ESPN has the game at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
Whipping around the rest of the college hoops landscape, the upset of the year happened last night in Portland, Oregon, as the Portland Pilots (+22.5 on the spread, +1800 on the moneyline) beat #6 Gonzaga 87–80. This was just the third time the Pilots have beaten the Zags in 43 total meetings. There’s trouble brewing in East Lansing, as the #10 Michigan State Spartans fell to the Minnesota Golden Gophers 76–73. For his second consecutive game, MSU star guard Jeremy Fears Jr. is making headlines for the wrong reasons. Last night, he picked up a late technical foul that cost the Spartans two points, and in the Spartans’ previous game vs. Michigan, he was accused of trying to trip multiple Wolverine players.
Speaking of the Wolverines, they are the only ranked team playing tonight as they face off against Penn State at 5:30 on FS1.
